2017 Jeep JK 2-Door Hardtop Leaking at Driver Door — Expert Fix

Quick answer: A 2017 Jeep JK 2-Door Hardtop leaking at the Driver Door in Heavy Rain is almost never a bad door seal - it is the missing body-side weatherstripping Jeep left off the body, so the door seal has nothing to compress against. The permanent fix is adding body-side weatherstripping for the JK; most owners install it themselves in under an hour with no special tools.

DRIVER SIDE DOOR LEAKS IN HEAVY RAIN, I REPLACE THE DOOR SEAL ALREADY ON BOTH DOORS, PASSENGER SIDE LEAKS ONLY ONCE IN A WHILE. I HAVE NEW SEALS ON THE FREEDOM PANELS. ALSO DOES THE SEAL FOR THE TAILGATE AND GLASS HELP WITH THE INFAMOUS RATTLE? I ALREADY ADJUSTED THE LOCK STRIKER ON THE TAILGATE.

Hi Robert,

Thanks for reaching out!

The fact that you've already replaced the factory door seals on both sides
of your 2017 JK, along with the Freedom Panel seals, and you're still
experiencing leaks is a perfect example of why replacing the factory
weatherstripping often doesn't solve the underlying problem.

Unlike most vehicles on the road today, Jeep Wranglers do not have a proper
body-side sealing surface. Instead, the factory door seals are trying to
compress directly against painted metal. Since painted metal isn't a
consistent sealing surface, small gaps can develop around the upper door
and A-pillar areas, allowing water to enter during heavy rain.

The problem usually isn't the condition of the factory seals themselves.
It's the lack of a proper gasketed sealing surface for those seals to
compress against. You've already installed new seals, but they're still
trying to seal against the same painted metal.

Our body-side weatherstripping creates the missing sealing surface,
allowing your new factory door seals to compress evenly and consistently.
The included drip strips also help redirect water to the outside of the
Jeep rather than allowing it to enter the cabin.

Since you have a hardtop, our kit also seals the Freedom Panels themselves.
Even though you've already replaced those seals, the additional Freedom
Panel sealing material is an important part of the complete installation
and helps address the gaps that can allow water into the upper door areas.

Regarding your question about the infamous tailgate rattle, yes, the
additional weatherstripping around the cargo door and rear glass can help
reduce rattling by creating a more consistent gasketed contact surface and
reducing movement between the adjoining surfaces.

Since you've already adjusted the tailgate striker, adding the
weatherstripping may provide the additional cushioning needed to quiet
things down. However, if the rattle is coming from the hinges, latch
mechanism, spare tire carrier, or another loose component, weatherstripping
alone won't eliminate that particular noise.

The kit also helps reduce outside wind and road noise, making the cabin
noticeably quieter overall.

Here is the correct kit for your 2017 JK 2-door Hardtop:

I recommend installing all the included components, including the cargo
door and rear glass weatherstripping, so the entire Jeep is sealed as a
complete system.

If you have any questions before ordering or during installation, you have
direct access to me 7 days a week. I'm happy to help you get the leaks
stopped and hopefully quiet down that tailgate rattle at the same time!

Best regards,
Tony
