Hey Wade — unfortunately this is extremely common on the JKs, especially
the 4-door soft tops. The root cause is that Wranglers don’t use a
traditional body-side weather seal system like most vehicles on the road.
Instead, the soft top and door seals are trying to seal directly against
exposed painted metal surfaces and multiple removable panels, which creates
a lot of opportunities for water intrusion over time.
On the 4-door JKs, the most common leak points are:
• Upper door surround areas
• Header seal above the windshield
• Door corner transitions
• B-pillar and rear door seal areas
• Soft top tension becoming weaker with age
A lot of owners first notice wet carpets after heavy rain, car washes, or
when turning and hearing water dump from above the doors. The water can
travel quite a distance before it finally drips, which makes the source
confusing.
The good news is that most of these leaks can usually be improved
significantly once the sealing surfaces are addressed properly. Adding
vehicle-specific secondary weather stripping/leak fix kits is usually the
best long-term solution because it helps compensate for the factory design
limitations and creates a more consistent sealing surface.
