2017 Jeep JK 2-Door Hardtop Leaking at Passenger Door — Expert Fix

Quick answer: A 2017 Jeep JK 2-Door Hardtop leaking at the Passenger Door in Heavy Rain is almost never a bad door seal - it is the missing body-side weatherstripping Jeep left off the body, so the door seal has nothing to compress against. The permanent fix is adding body-side weatherstripping for the JK; most owners install it themselves in under an hour with no special tools.

Hi Kathy,

Thanks for reaching out!

Based on your description, your 2017 Wrangler Winter Edition is a JK model,
so you don't have to worry about whether to order the JK or JL kit. The JL
wasn't introduced until the 2018 model year.

The leaking you're experiencing on the front passenger side, along with a
smaller amount of water on the driver side during heavy rain, is a very
common issue on these vehicles.

The root cause usually comes down to the factory sealing design. Unlike
most vehicles on the road today, Jeep Wranglers do not have a proper
body-side sealing surface. Instead, the factory door seals are trying to
compress directly against painted metal. Since painted metal isn't a
consistent sealing surface, small gaps can develop around the upper door
and A-pillar areas, allowing water to enter during heavy rain.

Once water gets past those areas, it can travel behind the interior trim
before eventually collecting on the floor. That's why you can end up with a
significant amount of water on one side and only a little on the other.

Our body-side weatherstripping creates the missing gasketed sealing
surface, allowing your existing factory door seals to compress evenly and
consistently. The kit also includes drip strips that help redirect water to
the outside of the Jeep rather than allowing it to enter the cabin.

Since your Jeep has a hardtop, the kit also seals the Freedom Panels
themselves, which is an important part of properly sealing the upper front
door areas. This addresses the sealing system as a whole rather than just
replacing the factory door weatherstripping.

An additional benefit is that the kit helps reduce outside wind and road
noise, making the cabin noticeably quieter.

Here is the correct kit for your 2017 JK 2-door Hardtop:

Since you've only recently purchased the Jeep, I would also recommend
checking underneath the carpet on both sides to make sure there isn't
moisture trapped in the padding from previous rainstorms.

If you have any questions before ordering or during installation, you have
direct access to me 7 days a week. I'm happy to help you get your Jeep
completely sealed up so you can enjoy it without worrying about water every
time it rains.

Best regards,
Tony
